To me photography is an artistic journey of self-understanding and of personal expression. It is the medium through which I discover people, objects, and the world I inhabit. Photography is not simply what I choose to do, but who I am.
Photography can break barriers of language. In this context I attempt to interpret what I see. My art is the process by which I choose to explore the world around me, taking joy in the creative process, freedom.
I began shooting with casual intent in 1972 after learning film developing and darkroom printing at the New England School of Photography. My interest took hold in a focused committed way around 2005, though I never stopped shooting or appreciating during the interim.
Looking past the obvious, close observation and engagement of the subject is my process. The challenge is to see beyond the distraction of the conspicuous to capture its unique self. Some of my subjects are quite beautiful, others less so. My goal is to inspire those who see my work to look more carefully at the world around them, to discover beauty in unusual places.
